Suzanne's Bio
Classical Christian Educator
I am passionate about helping students to read and write well. Starting with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary English, I homeschooled our four children all the way through high school. One by one, they each decided to earn their undergraduate degrees, and some went on to earn master’s and law degrees.
Founder of a Private School
With a background as a Classical Christian educator, I was approached by other families from the nearby town, Nacogdoches, Texas, to start a Classical Christian school based on my experience of teaching those courses to my children and tutoring the children of other families. So we started a school, and I trained the other teachers in the classical Christian subject matter. This school ran for two years from 1999 to 2001. Then I went back to homeschooling our children since they were in high school, and I thought it was best for me to focus on helping them prepare for college entrance exams. The other families involved in the private school I started went on to establish a classical Christian school called Regents Academy in Nacogdoches, Texas, that is still in operation today.
I eventually taught English and Latin classes in a Christian homeschool co-op school for 11 years. I also offered tutoring to families for phonics, reading fluency, reading comprehension, grammar, mechanics, spelling, college test prep, and public speaking skills.
College Instructor
When my youngest child was a senior in high school, I enrolled in a master’s program at IU Kokomo to earn a degree in Liberal Arts with a focus on English writing and literature. While still a student, I was asked to become an adjunct teacher in the Freshmen Learning Communities to begin as soon as I earned my degree. From there, I taught English Composition, English Literature, and Public Speaking classes for 8 years. As an educator, one of the benefits of being an experienced high school English teacher and tutor and then becoming a college writing instructor is that I know what cognitive and writing skills high school students must master for college success.
Tutor of Children and ESL Adults
In addition to my years of teaching, I have been tutoring along the way. It started with tutoring children in phonics and grammar for their English and Latin classes many years ago. Then for 3 years, I tutored Conversational English to a group of Hispanic women who met in my home weekly. From that experience, I became a certified English tutor and a certified TESOL/TESL/TEFL teacher and tutor.
Tutor of ESL College Students
Eventually at the IU Kokomo Writing Center, I tutored American and international college students for 3 years. A few years later, I became the Coordinator of International Student Services, where I tutored students and conducted workshops for the international students to help them become more familiar with American Conversational English.
In 2022-2023, I became a tutor for Varsity Tutors, an online tutoring platform, and tutored phonics to young children, writing skills to high school and college students, business writing to adults, and ESL skills to adults whose English was a secondary language.
Senior Editor of a Womens Ministries Publication
I am currently the Senior Editor of the Women’s Ministries Publication of All Saints Anglican Church Weddington, NC.
My Perspective Today
An eager student myself, I am currently a part-time seminary student as I’m earning a Master of Arts in Bible and Theology degree.
At present, I enjoy tutoring very young children as well as college students, adults, and all ages in between. The way I approach tutoring for the different age groups is definitely an adjustment, but being able to connect with the person on the other side of the screen or in the seat next to me is a challenge that I relish.
